Rhythm

My baby boy has got rhythm. Thank goodness he got it from his mother because he certainly didn’t get any from me. If there was a reality television program about the worst dancers in American, I’d be a shoe in for the prize.

I watch him when music is playing and he just starts movin it! It is so fun to watch. As I continue to see him grow and change right before my eyes I can’t help but wonder what he is going to be taking away from his mother and I. I know he got his mother’s rhythm (thank god) and I hope he gets both of our appreciation of music, if all of its various forms.

Well I can’t post video here, but here s a good picture of him watching his cousin dancing away right before he breaks out some moves of his own!

And another of him waiting for the next tune to start…

I mean sitting on the porch, eating a piece of watermelon?
It takes me back to summers as a kid myself.

As parents, we do everything we can to protect our children from just about everything. We try to protect them from hurting themselves and others hurting them as well.  We try so hard to make sure they are safe at all times.

Protecting our children from physical dangers as a multi million dollar industry. There are people who have made careers of coming to your home and ‘child proofing’ it. There a hundreds of items you can order online, an entire section of gadgets and safety items in Babies R us. There are some measures that are very successful (wall plug covers, padded corners on tables, but, for the most part these items are CRAP.  Kids are resourceful and a hell of a lot smarter than we give them credit for. They quickly figure out how to circumvent the gadget (or they are so difficult not even the parent can work them).

Here’s a tip to the manufacturers of these safety devices, SOME BETTER INSTRUCTIONS ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE PACKAGE! I can tell you we have personally returned multiple purchases because they just weren’t quite what we were looking for or they didn’t work out for our apartment cabinets.

Well, enough ranting. As I was mentioning before, many of these safety items are just not well put together or very effective. I get a call from New Mom saying “remember that lock we gave my mom for her cabinets? Well, ‘your’ son broke it.” My reply was “huh? Broke it? Like HULK SMASH broke it?” “Yup” I don’t know if I was proud, upset or just shocked.

So just to support my statement above, a vast majority of these “safety” devices are a joke.

So there it is (or was).
